Description
Lionshead – Smokey Pilsner Malt
When almost the entire state of Oregon was on fire in September, paired with EXTREMELY hazardous air quality due to smoke, we had a batch of Pelton in our machine. Not knowing how it would affect the batch, we malted on…
Germination was extended an additional 2 days because the intake air was that starved for oxygen. Kilning was reduced by 7 hours, also unprecedented. The result of blowing wildfire smoke through germinating barley for 9 days is a version of Pelton that is slightly sweet with a hint of smoke. No rauchmalz here…just a nuanced malt completely influenced by the Oregon environment at that moment in time. We decided to name this batch Lionshead, after Oregon’s largest wildfire, just west of us. (1.8 SRM, 37 PPG)
