Description
Mecca Grade is an estate malthouse located on 1,000 irrigated acres in Madras, Oregon. A grain growers’ paradise, their location in the rain shadow of the Cascades provides hot, dry days and cool nights perfect for growing specialty seed and grain.
Much like a vineyards’ location determine the character of its grape varietals, our grains are unique to Mecca Grade due to their uniform growth within a 2-mile radius of the malthouse. As such, our malts are truly unlike anything else available.
The result of blowing wildfire smoke through germinating barley for 9 days is a version of Pelton that is slightly sweet with a hint of smoke. No rauchmalz here…just a nuanced malt completely influenced by the Oregon environment at that moment in time (Summer 2020). Mecca Grade decided to name this batch Lionshead, after Oregon’s largest wildfire, just west of their farm. For use at 80%+ of the grainbill because of its subtlety.
